If you live anywhere in Southern California, chances are you were recently told to watch your water usage in light of a historic water drought affecting the region. With that in mind, us here at Preferred Plumbing and Rooter Services created the following blog post to teach you how to deal with water droughts and give you tips on saving water. Let us tell you more.
What is a water drought?
California defines a drought as a period of drier-than-normal conditions that result in water-related problems. When rainfall is less than normal for any extended period of time, the flow of streams in rivers, lakes, and other sources of water declines. If the dry weather persists and water-supply problems develop, the dry period becomes a drought.
Interestingly enough, there are multiple types of droughts. A hydrologic drought refers to the reduced streamflow or groundwater levels. On the other hand, a meteorological drought refers to lack of precipitation, while an agricultural drought is a lack of soil moisture.
A water drought can have many adverse impacts. On the short-term, declines in surface water flows is detrimental to water supplies for agriculture and cities, among other purposes. What this means is that households and business have less water at their disposal, seriously impacting their day-to-day activities.
In the long run, water droughts can result in things as intense as land sinking. In coastal communities, seawater can enter the aquifer system as there is less natural groundwater flows to the ocean.
What you can do
One of the most effective things you can do when managing water scarcity is installing special tanks that store rainwater for irrigation. This, in turn, can have the added benefit of saving you money on your water bill –– you will be spending less water and resources to water your backyard or front lawn.
You can also set up drip irrigation for more efficient watering. This can similarly have a positive impact on your water bill, perfect for families on a budget.
Last but not least, you can have a plumber inspect your plumbing infrastructure to catch any leaks that might be draining your home. Here at Preferred Plumbing and Rooter Services, we are more than happy to help.
