Sinks and faucets are a common sight in kitchens and bathrooms. We use them to wash hands, brush teeth, wash dishes, prepare food and many other tasks. With all this use, is it any wonder why sink and faucets develop problems?
FAUCETS
A kitchen or bathroom faucet is a device called a tap. A tap controls the flow of liquid out of a pipe. Handles (or in hands-free faucets, sensors) are used to control the flow of water, which emerges from a spout and pours into the sink below. The sink has a drain which allows wastewater and other materials to be transported out of a house into the municipal sewer system.
Faucets are complicated mechanisms that contain several components. In addition to handles and spouts, faucet components also include:
- An aerator, which controls water pressure and helps maintain a steady flow of water.
- A cartridge valve, which controls the flow and temperature of the water.
- A mount, which keeps the faucet secured in place.
- The body, which is where the hot and cold water are mixed before passing through to spout.
- O-rings are used to maintain watertight seals between the different components.
In residential settings, faucets and sinks are usually located in bathrooms and kitchens. In commercial settings, they can be located in food processing facilities, pet grooming businesses, and laboratories, to name a few.
SINKS
Sinks come in many styles, including drop-in sinks, undermount sinks, farmhouse sinks, all-in-one sinks, workstation sinks, commercial sinks and bar/prep sinks. They are available in various sizes and depths. Sinks can have single or double basins and are constructed from waterproof materials such as cast iron, copper, ceramics, composite materials, and stainless steel.
FAUCET AND SINK DAMAGE
Most faucets and sinks see extensive use. Over time, this can cause wear that results in damage to the components inside the faucet. Some of the signs that the components inside in you faucet are damaged include:
- Your faucet is dripping and the water cannot be completely turned off.
- You have noticed water stains, mold, or other water damage under the sink or at the bottom of the faucet.
- Components of the faucet have been damaged.
- Instead of a steady stream of water, the water “spits” out of your faucet’s spout.
- Low water pressure.
- Your faucet is making strange noises, such as screeching, clicking, or clanking.
- Your faucet is leaking at the seems
- Rust and/or mineral deposits on the surface of your faucet.
In some cases, homeowners can perform the repairs themselves. Replacement faucet parts are generally inexpensive. However, most Inland Empire homeowners do the smart thing and call a plumber. Plumbers have the necessary tools and training to pinpoint the source of your problem and perform repairs.
