It’s a horror most of us have experienced – you flush the toilet, but instead of the water draining out, it begins to rise, higher and higher, filling the bowl. If you’re lucky, it will stop rising before it reaches the rim. If you’re not, you’re going to have one awful mess to clean up.
Persistently overflowing toilets could be a sign of a serious plumbing issue. Ignoring a problem like this could create health risks and cause water damage to the floor and other areas around your toilet. Call Preferred Plumbing and Rooter Services for 24/7 toilet repairs in Pomona and surrounding communities.
WHY DO TOILETS OVERFLOW?
There are many reasons why your toilet can start to overflow:
Clogged drain
Triolets can overflow when we flush too much toilet paper or other items that shouldn’t be flushed, such as feminine products, paper towels, sanitary wipes, etc.
Blocked vent pipe
This vertical pipe connects to all plumbing fixtures and allows air into the pipes after each flush. If a vertical pipe gets clogged with debris, it can stop draining or drain slowly.
Improperly adjusted float
The tank float controls how much water flows into the bowl after each flush. If the float is too high, too much water can flow into the bowl, causing the toilet to overflow.
Full or obstructed septic tank
If you have a septic system, the septic tank may be full or obstructed, causing wastewater to backflow into the home.
STEPS TO TAKE IF YOUR TOILET OVERFLOWS
Here’s what to do when your toilet begins overflowing:
First, turn off the water supply. You can do this by turning off the valve attached to the line running from your toilet into the wall. Don’t try re-flushing the toilet – this will only make the problem worse!
Next, try to unclog the toilet. We recommend that you use a toilet plunger or plumbing auger. It’s a good idea to place some towels around the base of the toilet for spills and have a bucket and mop ready – clearing a toilet clog can oftentimes be a dirty job. You’ll probably want to wear protective gloves and eyewear as well.
Place a plunger tightly over the toilet’s drain hole and push up and down for 15–20 seconds. When the water starts to drain, you’ll know you’ve cleared the blockage. Turn on the water supply and flush the toilet again to ensure the clog has been cleared.
Don’t use harsh drain cleaners to clear a clog – bleach and other harsh chemicals can damage your toilet and drain pipes.
